Edible flowers seeds: Borage. Borago Officinalis. Generous pack size of over 200 seeds!
Much larger quantity than most other pack sizes, perfect for wildflower borders, meadows and cottage gardens
Long flowering annual beloved by bees, the beautiful blue Borage flower is edible for humans too!
Produces bright blue, star shaped flowers all summer long, that point downwards. Because of this, the flowers give much needed pollen and nectar for bees and other insects even during wet weather. This makes Borage an important pollinator plant.
Beekeepers enjoy growing Borage for the rich source of nectar and also for the beautiful coloured pollen
Borage makes a great companion plant for many edibles, especially tomatoes, strawberries, squash, cabbage, peas and beans.
Borage is a culinary herb and has many popular uses, including:
- Using the star shaped flowers in cocktails and to decorate cakes, salads etc
- Using the cucumber flavoured leaves in drinks such as Pimms
- Crystallising flowers for storage and baking
Borage has been used as an herb since the time of the ancient Greeks and Romans. Recently, it’s been found to be a rich source of GLA (gamma lineoleic acid), used to combat various cancers as well as pre-menstrual syndrome. Borage or starflower oil can sometimes be bought in capsule form for this purpose.

How to grow:
Its best to grow Borage directly in the ground, but if you must grow in pots, here’s how to do it:
You can start the seeds indoors from March. Using seedling modules or small pots, sow a few seeds in each cell or pot, and cover with 1cm of compost or seed starter mix. Vermiculite can also be used. When the seedlings establish they can be thinned out.
Transplant out to the garden when frost risk has passed. Make sure to acclimatise the young plants first by “hardening off”. This just means leaving them outside for a few hours a day to get used to the colder temperatures before planting them outside. Start with an hour the first day and build up to a few hours over a few days. Then they should be ready.
Alternatively (and we think best) sow directly outside when the risk of frost has passed. In favourable temperatures, Borage can begin flowering in as little as 6 weeks after planting. Here on the west of Ireland it’s a little longer if we have a cold spring, but Borage is quite hardy and will survive a fair bit of neglect in our experience!
Borage will thrive in poor fertility, no need to fertilise soil.

No Harm Farm, an artisan food producer based in Kilkee, Co. Clare. No Harm Farm is a sanctuary for biodiversity where magic is harvested everyday. As well as harvesting foraged ingredients in a sustainable way, on this tiny small holding on the Loop Head peninsula we grow speciality garlic to produce Black Garlic, which is made by taking fresh garlic and ‘aging’ the garlic, causing it to become soft, sweet and jet black throughout. The resulting ‘Black Garlic’ is more mellow in flavour, with none of the “whiffy” odour that fresh garlic has! It can be eaten on it’s own as a snack, or used in a myriad of recipes. Black Garlic is also nutritionally different from fresh garlic. The aging process causes the garlic to become higher in protein and bioflavanoids. Scientific studies have shown black garlic to be wonderful for the immune system, for heart health, for gut health and also as a form of protection against several cancers. Black Garlic is not new, but has been eaten in Asia for centuries. I grow garlic here in West Clare without the use of artificial fertilisers, herbicides or pesticides. It is aged and ripened without additives or preservatives, and sent to you in plastic free, compostable packaging. As well as black garlic, I also create other, small batch artisan food products such as Wild Atlantic Seaweed salt and Irish Flower Salt. All No Harm Farm products are 100% Vegan Friendly
