Hill at Lissoughter, Lough Inagh, Connemara
Greetings from County Limerick, where I create drawings and paintings to celebrate the beauty, culture and history of Ireland and her people.
A beautiful hill that evokes the wonderful stories of Galway writer Walter Macken, who was an artist with words. My husband Dolf wanted to stop for a while to take photos of Lough Inagh, so I took a little walk and got a proper look at this hill - you miss so much when you are driving - and got a photo of it. I can easily imagine Walter Macken characters working the land here, talking among themselves, sometimes even planning rebellions. 2022, Acrylic on canvas, 30 x 20 cm, 3.5 cm deep (11.8 x 7.8 x 1.4 inches)
Deep-sided canvas, with hanging hooks and string, ready to hang. Unframed - but you can still frame it if you wish.
I had read so much about Connemara over the years, from books by Walter Macken mainly. He created fictionalised characters that are involved in significant events in Irish history, and in so many ways brought history to life, his prose was so clear yet pared back, his use of language so precise and exquisite, he was an artist with words. I have almost all of his books in my house in County Limerick, I read some of the books when I was still growing up. So we found that lovely lake in the centre of Connemara, between two hills, and while Dolf was off taking pictures of the light on the water, I found myself turning around slowly, taking my own shots, and spent time looking at this hill too. I painted it at home a few weeks later.

Orla Clancy Contemporary Art sells artworks made by Irish artist Orla Clancy. Works sold include original drawing and paintings, works on paper and fine art prints on paper.
Orla's considerable body of work includes vibrant landscapes of places she has been to and loved, as well as read about, and works derived from sketches and photos of often random people, which she refers to as 'peoplescapes'. These are not portaits, more snapshots of moments in time which capture a social or relationship dynamic, in which the figures are often turned away from the viewer, or depicted with indistinct facial features, thus allowing the viewer to subconsciously project his or her own story into the painting, and so a narrative is created.
