Long Ago in Newmarket on Fergus Vol I by Colm Liddy
A collection of 300 photos and stories about Newmarket on Fergus and its people
‘Long Ago in Newmarket on Fergus’ is a book about a small parish in Co. Clare which just happens to be choc-a-bloc with history. For instance, President Michael D Higgins spent most of his youth here from the age of five to 19. (see photos) And it was here that he met the unsung schoolteacher who would inspire him to become the force of nature which he became. Newmarket is also home to Bunratty and Dromoland, and been visited by everyone from Daniel O’Connell to Eamon de Valera and even The Beatles. Yet still the most fascinating stuff concerns people and tiny townlands you never even heard of. This is a book packed with hundreds of photos and it tells the stories to go with them. Beginning life as a Facebook page called ‘Long Ago in Newmarket on Fergus’, it has built a great following over the past year.
